Irish Girl Guides

The Irish Girl Guides is a uniquely girl-only, youth-driven, active and dynamic organisation. It offers a varied and exciting programme for girls and young women aged 5-30 years, and opportunities for leaders of all ages.

In an all-female organisation, the girls are free to progress and express themselves in a comfortable setting. They enjoy the activities as they can ‘just be girls’ without any pressures and learn to be themselves in a safe environment while learning the skills that will one day help them to be responsible citizens and adults.

SMILY LGBT Youth Project

SMILY aims to provide a safe, fun and accepting environment, where young LGBT (lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgendered) people can be themselves. The group gives an opportunity for young people to socialise with other like-minded young people, develop friendships and access information and support.

Sunbeam House Children’s Respite Service

Sunbeam House Children’s Respite Service is located at St. Ciaran’s Services, Carrick-on-Shannon, Co. Leitrim.  We provide part-time respite placements to children with special needs from 5-18 years. Referral to this service is through the HSE. We provide a person-centred approach to care, promote community involvement and we work in partnership with families, HSE therapists and schools.

North Leitrim Resource Centre

North Leitrim Resource Centre is a community resource sponsored by the Sligo/Leitrim Council of Trade Unions and is a member of the Congress of Trade Unions Network.  

Services Offered:

Community Employment Scheme, Training and Work Experience for unemployed, secretarial support for Community Groups, promotion for community events.

Sligo Citizens Information Service

Citizens Information Services (CIS) provide the face-to-face service to the public. They are supported and funded by the Citizens Information Board. Citizens Information Services provide free, impartial and confidential information, advice and advocacy.

Each Citizens Information Service covers a geographical area, either country-wide or part of an urban area, and delivers its services through a network of Citizens Information Centres (CICs). Citizens Information is provided by 42 Citizens Information Services from 268 locations. These consist of 106 Citizens Information Centres (54 full-time and 52 part-time) and 162 outreach services.

Service is also provided at Citizen Information Centre, Rockwood Parade, Sligo and Teach Laighne, Tubbercurry, Co. Sligo.

Tusla – Child and Family Agency

Tusla, the Child and Family Agency, provides a range of universal and targeted services for children, young people and families, including:

Under the Child and Family Act, 2013 the Child and Family Agency is charged with:

  • supporting and promoting the development, welfare and protection of children, and the effective functioning of families;
  • offering care and protection for children in circumstances where their parents have not been able to, or are unlikely to, provide the care that a child needs. In order to discharge these responsibilities, the Agency is required to maintain and develop the services needed in order to deliver these supports to children and families, and provide certain services for the psychological welfare of children and their families;
  • responsibility for ensuring that every child in the State attends school or otherwise receives an education, and for providing education welfare services to support and monitor children’s attendance, participation and retention in education;
  • ensuring that the best interests of the child guides all decisions affecting individual children;
  • consulting children and families so that they help to shape the agency’s policies and services;
  • strengthening interagency co-operation to ensure seamless services responsive to needs;
  • undertaking research relating to its functions, and providing information and advice to the Minister regarding those functions; and
  • commissioning services relating to the provision of child and family services

West Sligo Family Resource Centre (FRC)

Family Resource Centres (FRCs) provides a range of universal and targeted services and development opportunities that address the needs of families.

West Sligo Family Resource Centre Ltd. aims to empower individuals and families to improve their quality of life by fostering an ethos of self-development, promoting the principles of community development and encouraging people to access the supports and services that they need to enrich their lives.

YAPSL Youth Action Project Sligo Leitrim

Youth Action Project Sligo Leitrim (YAPSL) is a Youth Diversion project.  It works with 12 to 17 year olds in the Sligo/Leitrim area who are involved in criminal or anti-social behaviour, or who are at risk of becoming involved in this behaviour. Our Early Intervention programme works with 8-11year old’s who may be at risk of becoming involved in anti-social behaviour or need support to maintain positive behaviour.

Aims of YAPSL:

  • Identify young people at risk and plan and deliver intervention programmes.
  • Direct young people away from conflict with authorities e.g. Gardaí, courts, residents and community groups.
  • Provide a safe place for young people to discuss issues important to them.
  • Develop Gardaí and community relationships.
  • Provide support to those young people in need of emotional and developmental support.

Objectives of YAPSL:

  • To identify and work directly with the young people at risk of being in trouble with the law.
  • To provide young people with skills and alternative ways to spend their time.
  • To foster positive relationships between young people, local authorities, community groups and those in authority.

Tubbercurry Family Resource Centre

Tubbercurry Family Resource Centre provides a range of supports and services for families, individuals and communities.

Services include the following:

  • Programmes for parents, children and people who are unemployed .
  • Social activities and health and well-being supports. 
  • Full childcare service for children  1 to 12 years of age.
  • Person-centred counselling for teens and adults .
  • A ‘Rainbows Programme’ .    
  • Parenting supports for parents from the local area.
