Rape Crisis and Sexual Abuse Counselling Centre Sligo, Leitrim and West Cavan

The response of the Centre to the issues of sexual violence is to provide the following services universally:

  • Crisis counselling
  • Ongoing face to face counselling
  • Outreach counselling
  • Free phone helpline
  • Support, advocacy and information for survivors, in particular around legal issues
  • Relationship counselling
  • Survivors Support Group Counselling, support and information for supporters of survivors
  • Hospital, court, GP, and/or Garda accompaniment
  • Education, training and awareness-raising
  • Lobbying and influencing policy on relevant issues through the Rape Crisis Network Ireland
  • Networking, experience and information sharing with other relevant voluntary and statutory organisations

Our aim is to enhance quality early childhood education and care and After Schools provision through direct work with Early Years and After School Service Providers in County Leitrim.

Family Support Service                                                                                                    

Family support workers provide targeted home based support to families in their own homes in Sligo town, North Sligo and North Leitrim.

 Work undertaken during these visits vary from:

  • Advise on children’s behaviour
  • De-cluttering
  • Early years development & mirroring parenting
  • Emotional support to parents
  • Financial issues, welfare payments
  • Food shopping
  • Introducing parents to parent & toddler groups
  • Linking with relevant health services
  • Parents Plus one to one parenting programmes
  • Preparation of healthy meals
  • School attendance
  • Supporting mothers with breast feeding
  • Supporting children with homework
  • Support to parents & children with additional needs
  • Supporting young mothers
  • Working with the parent on basic house hygiene
  • Working with teenagers

The time spent with the family depends on their needs.

Footprints Créche                                                                                                 

Footprints is a community based not for profit childcare service providing affordable sessional childcare for children up to 6 years old on a once off or continuous agreed basis especially to parents on lower income. Opening hours: Monday – Friday 09:00 – 17:00.

NEW COMMUNITIES SUPPORT AND INTERCULTURAL WORK     

Drop-In – Members of new communities can drop in for tea/coffee, information, companionship, peer support etc.

Volunteer Befriending Service – Working with Syrian refugee families, the volunteers spend a minimum of one hour per week with their allocated families.  The families get to practice their English, learn about life in Sligo while the volunteers get to learn about Syrian culture, try our new food and get to meet new people.

Intercultural workshops and events                                                             

Each year we host a family friendly intercultural event on St. Patrick’s Day and an International concert in the autumn.  During the year we may host intercultural interactive workshops, intercultural training for professionals and trips for those wishing to improve their English. We also provide English conversation classes with volunteers.

Social Prescribing for Health and Well being

Linking people with supports within the community.

Social prescribing is about supporting the health and wellbeing of people by using community-based activities and supports such as exercise, art, reading and gardening. There may also be an opportunity to attend self-help sessions such as stress control.

The Social Prescribing Link worker will talk to you about what activities interest you, the benefits of participating in them and will assist and support you in attending these activities.

Notes on referrals to the service:

We have our own Referral Form for the Family Support Service which provides home based family support. People can self-refer to the Social Prescribing service and will be provided with a form. For every other service there is no requirement for a Referral Form.

 Support Cultural Groups                                                                                            

In the past we have supported the Sligo Intercultural Forum and now we host Mala Polska (Polish group), Zemene (Latvian group) and North African/Asian women’s group.

Sligo County Council Tenancy Support Service

Residents in Council Housing and Rental Accommodation Scheme  (RAS) Tenancies in Sligo County are eligible to link to a tenancy support service for a defined period of time.  The service will assist with housing tenancy issues, rent arrears, estate management issues, household management or access to entitlements. Those offered tenancy support are usually at risk of homelessness or losing their tenancy. In some cases, those who are experiencing a housing crisis and need to access social housing supports will be referred to the tenancy support service.

Foroige

The project aims to support and develop the delivery of high quality drugs education programmes for young people and parents in order to promote the health and wellbeing of young people in County Leitrim. The project works with all young people aged between 10 – 17 years in their community focusing on empowering young people to make positive and healthy life choices. The project provides Intensive individual work, focused group work and parents programmes. All Drug & Alcohol Education programmes will aim to involve young people aged 10-17 years in developmental processes that enable them to: Develop a positive self-image and self-esteem. Build personal autonomy and the capacity to make independent decisions. Participate in positive peer groups that promote personal development and respect the uniqueness of each person. Develop a sense of responsibility for the consequences of ones actions. Participate in discussions where they give their true opinions and listen to the opinions of others. Take greater charge of oneself and one’s life. To involve parents and adults in the community to respond to the needs of young people. The development of these capacities is essential in responding to the issue of drug misuse.

Leitrim County Council Arts Office

Leitrim County Council Arts Office provides information, advice and assistance to artists, arts groups and festivals, events organisers, venues, amateur and community arts groups, schools, organisations incorporating arts projects in non-arts settings, and other local and national public bodies. It develops and co-ordinates many programmes independently and in association with these partners. The Arts Office also develops policies in relation to various aspects of the arts and assists communities to become involved in the arts both as participants and audiences, for children and young people to explore and engage with creative opportunities and to empower artists to fulfil their potential.

North West Regional Drug & Alcohol Task Force

Task Forces were set up under the National Drug Strategy 2001-2008 to provide a response to illicit drug use and underage drinking problems. Task Forces have representatives from government agencies, local authorities, community and voluntary groups. The Task Force’s primary role is to co-ordinate responses to local needs. NWRDATF was set up in 2003 and covers Donegal, Sligo, Leitrim and North West Cavan.

The overall objective is “to significantly reduce the harm caused to individuals and society by the misuse of drug through concerted focus on supply reduction, prevention, treatment and research.”

COVID-19 LOCAL ARRANGEMENTS

 Arising from the COVID-19 emergency, the following arrangements are in place for community and voluntary drug treatment and related services in NWRDATF Sligo, Leitrim until further notice. Services will continue to operate at their maximum capacity, except that provision has been adjusted to take account of the following:

  • Some buildings are completely closed to the public;
  • Planned group activities have been suspended;
  • Staffing rotas have been organised to minimise staff interaction thereby maximising service continuation in the event of a staff-related infection;
  • The main focus of provision is continued contact with existing service users;
